What occupations will be in demand (or decline) in 2020?

Not sure what career or study pathway to take?

Demand for just about any Health Professionals, Carers and Aides, Community and Personal Service Workers, Clerical and Office Support Workers, and IT Professionals occupations you can think of are projected to increase significantly over the next 5 years.

Here is a sample of occupations projected to be in demand or in decline from a range of industry sectors.

medical

  • Audiologists and Speech Therapists – 40.8 % increase
  • Nutrition Professionals – 37.1 % increase
  • Registered Nurses – 20.0 % increase
  • Aged and Disabled Carers – 30.6 % increase
  • Child Carers – 26.1 % increase
  • Massage Therapists – 27.3 % increase
  • Fitness Instructors – 35.0 % increase
  • Beauty Therapists – 28.7 % increase
  • ICT Support and Test Engineers – 26.5 % increase
  • Software Application Programmers – 18.4 % increase
  • Betting Clerks – 13.6 % increase

Each year, the Department of Employment produces employment projections by industry, occupation, skill level and region for the following five-year period. These employment projections are designed to provide a guide to the future direction of the labour market, however, like all such such exercises, they are subject to an inherent degree of uncertainty. The report does however provide a good picture of the projected industry and occupations with expected growth and/or shrinkage.

On the other hand, industry areas with occupations which are projected to significantly decrease in demand include various Labourers, Machinery Operators and Drivers, Automotive and Engineering Trade Workers, Skilled Animal and Horticultural Workers, and Clerical & Admin Workers. For example (sample only):

  • Product Assemblers – 28.2 % decrease
  • Metal Engineering Process Workers – 31.5 % decrease
  • Deck & Fishing Hands – 20.5 % decrease
  • Sewing Machine & Shot Firers – 25.3 % decrease
  • Machine Operators – 16.6 % decrease
  • Vehicle Body Builders & Trimmers – 13.1 % decrease
  • Structural Steel & Welding Trades Workers – 10.5 % decrease
  • Shearers – 23.6 % decrease
  • Mixed Crop & Livestock Workers – 15.9 % decrease
  • Library Assistants – 27.6 % decrease
  • Insurance Investigator, Risk Surveyor – 15.9 % decrease
  • Keyboard Operators – 17.0 % decrease
